Now that you have bought yourself the new Google Nexus S, with a cheaper price and high technology, you might want to use your new smartphone as maximum as possible. Here we give you useful little tricks and tips to utilize your phone.
1. Reclaim the comma
One thing that you will notice in the keyboard of the Google Nexus S
when you are texting is that you cannot find the comma symbol, because
the place for it is substituted by the voice search icon. But you can
reclaim the symbol, by clicking Setting, pick Language and Keyboard, and
then tap Android Keyboard and you will find a dropdown menu with the
label Voice input. Here you can choose if you want the voice search icon
to be in the front screen, the symbol menu or even delete it altogeher,
and you will find the comma symbol on the keyboard again.
2. Inbuilt battery graph
We all know that smartphones will suck up battery power pretty fast. But the Google Nexus S
has a built in battery graph, an app where you can see what is going on
with your battery. Just go to Settings, click About Phone, open Battery
Use and tap the smaller battery graph at the top, and then a graph will
show up, complete with information on how fast the power is used up and
what the phone is up to at the time.
3. Get rid of unwanted apps quickly
Uninstalling applications on the phone through the menu system can
take a while and this may frustrate you. But in the Android Market,
there is a Downloads tab that can show you everything that you’ve downloaded from Google. Click it to see what you’ve downloaded,
and then choose whichever you want to uninstall, and then click
Uninstall on the bottom right-hand corner. Choose the apps from the
list, it’s pretty quick and you can also give feedback to the developers
on why you choose to uninstall the applications.
4. Boost your media experience
One problem with the Android 2.3 platform is that it is still
incompatible with many file types and basic operations. This makes it
difficult for the users to optimize their media experience. But we
recommend you to use MixZing for playing music, as it has all the
features of the Android experience but it also has the ability to mix a
playlist on a single song choice, and also a decent built in EQ, just
like in Genius.
While for playing movies, we recommend mVideoPlayer for Android phone. It has a high level of file compatibility, multiple bookmark options and even a slider for brightness management. You can still see the clock through this application if you wish, a feature which is often overlooked.
5. Unlock the power of voice
Although we mentioned that the voice input in keyboard is not so
helpful, it doesn’t mean that it’s not useful. We can still use the
voice input for voice search feature. You can activate your voice by
holding down the search key, and you can use it from calling and
navigation to text entry and also Google searching. If you want to use
it for an application, for example for messaging, just tap the icon and
say your tap, although we think for this one you might consider to make a
phone call which makes more sense.
6. Stop the constant battery sipping
We mentioned about the quick use-up of battery power on smartphones
earlier, so if you think it is important to save battery power, you can
go to Settings menu and then pick Accounts and Sync, there’s a large
checkbox for background data. An option to save battery life is by only
manually checking updates for social networks or emails, this will
certainly help if you only check those things periodically. You can
update them only when you open the applications. Push notifications can
still work, but if you don’t really need instant updates, then you must
try this to save battery life.
7. Go 3D with Google Maps
So far, the most powerful for mapping in Android platform is the new
Google Maps 5.0, for it has the 3D vector view equipped with zoom in
ability and you can twist around certain cities from your phone. It also
includes compass orientation, which makes it easier when you are travelling on foot and for offline caching, the phone can smartly work out the places that you visit frequantly and even downloads the date when you’re using Wi-Fi and plugged in.
8. Unlock your file system
You will have to download a file manager for your Google Nexus S,
because it doesn’t have a built-in file management like in the Samsung
Galaxy S. What we mean is that you can’t do a thing when you have just
copied a media from your phone but you can’t find it in the gallery,
which is why you need a file manager. We recommend you to use Astro,
it’s super easy to move through the folders. It can even unzip folders
and search for file names, plus, it’s totally free.
9. Take a picture of yourself
Android 2.3 can support video call, and Google Nexus S gives you the
ability to do this by facilitating you with front VGA camera. But
there’s no mainstream application that lets you using the VGA camera for
a video call. But still, you can use it to take a picture of yourself.
Just open the camera application and push the camera switch icon in the
bottom right-hand corner, and there, you just capture an image of
yourself.
10. Easier copy and paste
Anenhanced Copy and paste feature is available for the Android 2.3,
you can do it just by holding down a word and see it copied to the
keyboard. You can cut and copy the word if you want to edit the text, or
you can simply need to long press on a phrase and then drag tabs to
pick the selected the words. The tabs are now larger and easier to
manipulate, which make the copying and pasting act a lot easier.
11. Check out the downloads
This is very simple yet handy application to check out the stuff you just downloaded from the internet. You don’t have to check out the internet browser to see the downloaded stuff, and you can even erase them from this app.
12. Bars to stop you scrolling
This update is nothing groundbreaking but very helpful. Sometimes
when we are scrolling down a list, and we’ve reached the bottom, we
cannot tell whether the list has ended or the phone is still loading
more options. In the Google Nexus S, you can see some orange flashes,
indicating that you have reached the end of the list.
13.Tricks with photos
There’s this cool trick for photo viewing in your gallery, if you see
stacks of picture, it means that there’s more than one itmen in that
category. Put to fingers on top of the stack and then pull them apart
and you can see them fly between your two fingers. You can easily check
out what’s in the stack and of course, this is a fun experience!
14. Easily access the special characters
You don’t have to trouble yourself when you’re about to use some
signs or symbols, simply hold down the full stop key, and it will show
up a grid of those symbols. Slide up your finger to access the
characters, like dashes, colons etc. You can do the same with the comma
key (if you have move it to the front screen), this feature also offers
an easy way to see the keyboard settings.
15. Auto-correct supercharging
An upgrade in the Google ushas ed the Android 2.3 makes it even
easier to auto-correct a text. For example, when you’re typing a text,
if the autocorrect has options, the space bar will light up and you can
choose one of the provided options. And if the word you choose is wrong,
you can correct it by just tapping the word and the autocorrect option
will show up again.
16. Quick access to numbers and capitals
A touch screen phone not only
offers us the ability to type faster, and it also has quick ways for
you, speed keystrokers. An example is hold the shift key and then tap a
letter to capitalize it, so you don’t have to enter the shift mode
separately. You can also hold down the symbol key and use another finger
to tap the numbers, and then let go, the ABC keyboard will come back
in.
