iPhone, Mission Impossible: a 2007 RIM Movie?
Over the week-end, there was a small drama unfolding as an alleged former employee talked about RIM’s reaction to Apple’s original iPhone announcement. The comment immediately spread like wildfire on the web, but basically, RIM (the company behind Blackberry products) could simply not believe that the idea of iPhone was even technically possible. They questioned the battery life (well, that was a good point) and the raw horse power needed to process all the data at the speed at which the iPhone was demonstrated on stage. Blackberry devices being among the slowest in today’s smartphone market, we can imagine why they would be surprised. To be fair, other brands were also said to be as shocked and skeptical about the whole iPhone thing. It seems surprising that RIM (and others) did not see it coming, but what happened can be described with 3 simple ideas:

Rumors: will not be used tablets and their upcoming smartphone lineup
Samsung has already announced that they've got their own dual-core processors in the works, but if a couple of analyst reports are correct, they won't be using it in their upcoming tablet and smartphone lineup. Glen Yeung, analyst for Citi Group, is reporting that Samsung has made a "sizable order" of NVIDIA's Tegra 2 chips for the first half of 2011 that will be used in both its tablets and smartphones. Why use a Tegra 2 instead of their own silicon? Yeung speculates that Google has made NVIDIA's chip the "reference design" for Honeycomb-powered tablets. Considering both of Yeung's claims, then BMO Capital Markets analyst Ambrish Srivastava's belief that Samsung's Galaxy Tab successor will be powered by a Tegra 2 core makes quite a bit of sense.

How Cell Phones Ruined Party Movies
The trailer for Take Me Home Tonight—a comedy that follows Topher Grace on what will either be the best or worst night of his life, set in 1988—has provoked two reactions. In one camp, there are people who think that spending a couple of hours watching Grace fall in love and come of age during the Reagan years might be a pretty good time. In the other, there are those asking why we are still waxing nostalgic over the 1980s and why can't we just film a basic party film set in the present day.
